Evaluation 7(Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you think you have learnt in the progression from it to the product?)

As we came to the completion of constructing our begining to a thriller scene, we allowed ourselves to look back at the first ever filming we did, which was the preliminary task. From looking back at this we see that our thriller is more well constructed; by this i mean the use of the camera in our thriller is more enhanced because of the different shots and camera angles we used, also the editing was done more sufficiently, which added effectiveness to our piece. As we looked back at our preliminary task we straight away saw that it was very unprofessional, especially the acting and the editing of the film.

For our preliminary task there wasn't much thoughts and ideas that had gone into it, we basically recorded and then pause to quickly make up what ever will happen next. This made the whole thing look very disorganised. The image quality seemed very poor and the camera wasn't entirely still. Also, titles were not used for example the characters that are in the film and who produce it.

For our thriller we used many different shots and camera angles to have our piece way more interesting than our preliminary task was. All of this allowed our piece to create tension and suspense for the audience and also allow them to keep in interest in our film so that they will watch on. Dissolves were used ion our thriller to show that time has passed.

For the preliminary task there was no music that would make the piece more interesting and more lively. As this factor isn't included it would be more unlikely for an audience to watch on. As for our actual thriller scene we added to music which allows the audience to have more of a feeling to what is happening in the scene.

Evaluation 6 (what have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this film?)

Mini DV camcorder

The mini DV camcorder was used to film our preliminary task, interviews and our thiller. I have allowed myself to become highly familier with this camera and able to start recording and pause at the correct moment that is needed.

Tripod
The tripod was used to allow the camera to be stabled and able to film with out any shaking of the camera. After a while of using this equiptment i have become more accurate in using it, i have learned how to pan a shot, move the camera up and down on the fix axis and also to tilt the camera up and down.

Digital camera

The digital camera had been used in order for me to take pictures of my storyboard to allow me to create a video animation. Again when using this equipment i learned how to put the camera in focus to allow the pictures taken come out to be clear.

The apple mac was used to apply all our video recording and used to edit it. At first it was kind of difficult to use this piece of equipment but as time passed we became familier with it and was able to use it effectively and efficiently.

Evaluation 5(How did you attract/ address your audience?)

Throughout our thriller we designed it to hold the audience attention, by bringing forth suspense and tension instantly so it could them keep watching to see what happens later.

We discovered our target audience by interviewing in person and producing a survey questionnaire for people to answer. We looked at both interview and survey to gather the information need to begin the constructing of our film, and to plan properly what its going to be like for example it could have been a paranoid thriller, political thriller or psychological thriller. By discovering our target audience is allows us to fix the charcters in our film in a similar way that our audience for exmaple the age of the characters. This allows the audience to bond with the charcters because by them being the same age they will see that they're living the same life style as them.

Our short thriller scene  contains a cliff hanger at the end of the. As the protagonists are in the garage, the antagonist walks in and closes the door allowing them to have nowhere to escape. As the protagonist approaches with the knife, the scene ends with the title and we don't know what will happen next, which leaves the audience in dispair as they would erge to see and know what happens next, but nothing is revealed.

Two locations were used in out thriller, one was inside of a house, on the streets and garage, we used these locations effectively to produce our sequence of film allowing their to be many different shots and having the change of lighting and colour. The setting will allow audience to be attracted to watch our film as you can see the houses in the background which they will have knowledge that this place is britain where the film is being shot. The locations are also used effectively allowing the tension and suspense to be created and making the audience feel as if they're in the same position as the characters in the film by making them feel dispair.

Many things are revealed in the being of our thriller to allow the audience continue watch. These moments were where you see the some tided up in a chair. This allows the audience feeling to watch on to see the mystery of who is tided up and why.

Evaluation 4 (Who would be the audience for your media product?)

People of the age 18- 30 would be our audience for our media product because it shows a relation with them and the characters that are with in our film. A while back we created a survey on Survey Monkey, we got feedback and saw what people want and expected to get from a thriller and the age of that we should direct our thriller towards.
The survey questionnair reveals that our film  should be aim at 11-20 year olds, this group would watch our film because of the genre being a thriller, young these days love the tension and the suspense that is built that will make them frightened and jump off their seats.

Wordle: media

Evaluation 3 (What kind of instution media might want distribute your media?)

There are many film companies and institutions that could distribute our film to be looked by Film 4, Working and Title and Metrodome . Below are the companies i have researched into that distributed films like my own these are Universal Studios and Demension Films.

Universial have produced these thrillers:
The Unborn
Drag Me To Hell
The Strangers

Deminsion Films have produce these thrillers:
The ghost writer
Twilight Saga

In lesson we learned about the Microwave Scheme. This Scheme was set up by the UK Film Council where amature film makers are provided with a fund of #100,000 to produce a film of their own. Along with learning about the Microwave Scheme, we watch a film called 'Shifty', this a film that had been funded by this scheme, the took 18 days to construct, and Metrodome distributed it as it showed potential.

Our film could be shown digitally in the cinema, on Television, the internet which would be youtube etc and DVD. There many ways that a distributing company can advertise my film below are just a few examples:

Official websites
articles
Trailers
internet banners
film festivals
build boards

By using a range of these marketing methods there will be more likeliness that our film will be watched by people. Many of these methods are used by for films that have been produced like our own.

Evaluation 2 (How does your media product represent particular social groups?)

The characters

Yemi Samuels, is a very close friend to Andre, and they both share the same house. He is the same age as Andre, as they have know each other since birth and grew up together. Throughout the scene Yemi is tided up and is unable to release himself , the high angle shot that is used when his face is reveal show us that he is powerless and vulnerable. His sexuality isn’t reveal because again it’s not relevant.

Caleb Obembe plays the antagonist in our thriller, the one who is dressed in full black clothing and hooded. Not much can be said about this character  as he is near enough unknown.

Andre Smith is a smart and intelligent business man, this is re- enforced by the way he is dressed and the way he is speaking on the phone as if he’s speaking to one of his business partners. He is a 25  year old man, slim and tall. He is fast witted as he realises something is wrong as he sees that his door is opened and suspects that something isn’t right as his facial expression reveals. His sexuality isn’t reveal as it isn’t relevant.

For our thriller scene it consists of 3 characters, 2 protagonist and 1 antagonist. All characters in our film are black males because we didnt actually consider and realise this issue as we were constructing our film. The sexuality of the characters wasn't considered when making the scene. The characters were portrayed as being working class people, by doing this it will allow people like themselves become more interested as they are able to associate with these character. Young people are shown in a positive way because of how they are dressed and there posture showing that they are of a good will. The antagonist is our film could be stereotyped as being part of a gang as he is dress in black and hooded up, this isn't what we are trying to portray in our film.

Evaluation 1 (In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media?)

The genre of a thriller follow specific devices so that it is able to build a particular effect on the audience.  Thriller films often be revolved around crime.  A lot of action will be conveyed in order to create a trill for the audience.  In many thriller films the protagonist will portray weakness that the antagonist will have advantage of, this may have the protagonist lead into perlous situations so that it can build the suspense and the action in the film. Thrillers include plots revolved around amnesia  mistaken identity and doppelgangers. Thrillers most of the time enigma in the beginning of the film and eventually begin to complicate them throughout until the climax is reached.

Our piece of a begining to a thriller opening, develops and challenges forms and conventions in many ways for example, psychological thrillers, this is because it incorporates elements from the mystery and drama genre and also to the obvious traits of the thriller genre. For my thriller i took the idea of someone being tided up in a garage from a music video i viewed a while back, which was a grime music video. Below is the music i used the idea from for my thriller, if you would like to see the part i look at fast foward it to 3 minutes 34 seconds because the rest of it is irrelevant.

Throughout my thriller scene suspense and tension is built. As leon Andre is walking home, we see still shots of someones arms tided together, then a view of the persons legs tided together, at this point it builds the audiences suspence because they are keen to see what the person who is tited up looks likes, and they may have the thoughts of this person being dead or not. The tension comes about when the antagonists drops the knife while the atmosphere has become dark and gloomy, the music changes as this scene occurs, which allows the audience feel on edge. We also allowed the antagonist's face not to be seen until the end , which enforces the mystery of the character. The antagonist is suited in full black revealing that he is superior and also getting the sense that his intensions are to do evil.
The images below show what i have explained.

The things of our thriller that are origional to most thrillers is that the mystery of the antagonist isn't reveal until the end as we don't see his face throughout until he comes in, to murder the protagonist's. Although this end scene blacks-out and we do not see what happens to the protagonist, this here is called a cliff hangers, allowing the audience to be left and think what may occur next.

Our new plan for our new thriller

We have produced a new plan for our short thriller scene, as the last one we planned and film didnt seem acceptable for it to be shown to audiences. I and my partner had began doing deeper research to see what actually makes a good thriller so that it will enable us to apply it to our own. We watch different thrillers and deeply analysed each one so that we become mindful of what we need to do to achieve our goal. From our last thriller we produced we saw that we needed to include more action and a range of different carmera shots to show the weakness and the power in individual characters in the scene. Moreover, the things that are occuring in our thiller scene must change to allow it to become highly suitable to the genre we are set to approach.

Our title

The title of our thriller must be appropiately chosen in order to create a good effect on our viewers, and which to allow them to want to see more of. We used live type on the i-mac to produce our title on which is 'Entrenchment'

Editing our thriller

Today we are editing our new thriller scene, we are hoping that we don't see that it is useless as the last one we produce while we began editing. We set ourselves the task to complete all our titles and to edit them into the thriller scene in th approprate places allowing it ro become more appealing to the audience.

Dialogue

As our triller scene is a begining opening to a thriller film we are not looking to include much dialogue. The dialogue that is going to be used is going to be short and snappy to create more suspense and to allow the audience see action so that they would like to watch on.

uploading my thriller

At this very moment my short thriller scene is being uploaded and once this has been done, i will share it with you all by posting it onto my blog, i hope you all get what you were waiting for.

Hoping this is our final editing to do

Today we are Editing and hoping we will be finished by the end of this day, so that you can get a full view our final thriller piece, and to give us feedback on what is good about our thriller and the ways we can improve on it.

what we complished today

Today we have finally completed our short thriller scene and i can say that i and my partner are highly pleased with what we have produced. Tomorrow is the day when we are going to upload it onto YouTube and afterwards post it on to our blogs, I hope that When you watch it you will enjoy it as much as we have. Special thanks to Caleb Obembe who acted the antagonist in our thriller scene and allowing it to become at the standard it is.

Editing again

Today again were trying to complete the editing for our thriller piece. To be honest we are kind of finding it difficult to put in the titles and sometimes it can become frustrating because theres a lot of saving involve for each title we make with different named files, so sometimes we may become confused on which one we are needing. All titles must be in the same font and style, the titles that we need to include are, the name of who the film is by, the two main characters, our title, music that we used, edited by, director of photography, costume designer and the director's name.

Applying music to our thriller

Today we were searching hard to find the most suitable, most tension and suspense built music for our thriller scene, and i can say we were successful in doing so and we are entirely pleased with our findings. After a long day of frustration of looking for music on different web sites such as mobygratis.com , freeplaymusic.com, newgrounds.com and unsigned.com we ended up with nothing and it came to a point that it seemed as if we were not going to find our music. We then suddenly thought to go onto YouTube.com, and started typing in random words to do with triller and eventually we captured the right music for our thriller.

filming

Today we took the camera to film a part that wasn't done how we wanted it to be, this was the part where the antogonist is looking from inside the house window from above and is watching the protagonist approach his house door. The reason why this part had to be
re-filmed is because when we uploaded it onto the I-mac we saw that it was too dark and were unable to see the approach to the door properly.

What is thriller

Thriller movies are full of action and most of the time guns are invloved. Action in  thriller are highly full of pace and sometime slow movement of characters is used to highten the tension. A thriller most of the time contains a hero that exceeds to defeat a villian in a film. Thrillers are made up of red-herrings, suspense and cliffhangers which all keeps the viewer of the film on edge. Thrillers mainly come across being these types; psychological, social and political tensions. Here is one of Alfred Hitchcock's sayings about what the audience should encounter "dip their toes in the cold water of fear to see what it is like".

The art of the title

name of our film

After all the discussion that i and my partner have had about what we should name our thriller, we have now come to an agreement and finalised that our thriller should be called Entrenchment.

Looking for music for our thriller

At the moment we are searching for the most appropriate and effective music to go with our short thiller scene. The music that is needed has to build tension and suspense in order to have the audience on edge and to increase their anxiety. We have now created an account with mobygratis; which is a website that allows students like myself to download free music. At this moment were not totally sure if this website will be fully useful for our thriller because the music we've been listening too so far does'nt seem highly appropriate. Hopefully in the future we will find the correct music that is needed to have our thiller at its full potential.

our thriller

This is here was supposed to be our final thriller scene, but we didnt allow it to be so because as we were editing, we didnt feel that it would be good enough to even be marked. We discovered that in many parts of the scene were very dark and unable to see the characters taking part. We also found that throughout the whole scene there isn't a sign of thrill taking place, this is highly unacceptable as we were set the task to create a short thiller scene. The camera shots were not suitable for as they were too long, as this is supposed to be a thriller scene again this is unacceptable. Hopefully now that we have realised our mistakes we will produce a much better thriller scene so that we are able to put it forward in order for people to watch and enjoy the thriller.

today we planned to film

Today we planned to do some filming to add to what we've got already, but were'nt able to do so because all the characters in the film that we needed did'nt show up because the more important situations they were dealing with. Hopefully tomorrow will be a day that there won't be any unfortunate interruptions.

Deciding the name for our thriller

Today we have tried to decide the final name for our thriller but will still have come across one that will be highly appropriate for our thriller. I and my partner keep attempting to come up with the most oustanding name but each time we keep on disagreeing and changing it. Hopefully in the future time we will come with a suitable name that we both will highly agree on.
Below are images of where our filming may take place.

Things did'nt go to plan

We spent alot of time filming and editing what was suppose to be our final piece begining of our thriller. We eventually realise that the final out come was'nt most appropriate; we decided not to use this as our opening to a thriller because we had recorded 1minute 50seconds  of worthless footage. We gathered that our thriller needed many different angle shots to allow more suspense to show, also we have decided to come up with a better story line too. We have posted this onto our blog so that you can have a view of our origonal plan.

Recording

today we managed to record most of the beginning of the scene so we could edit the following day, we waited until it was dark so we could start recording , we recorded the black sky so we could put our ident on top which will create a very scary effect.
we finally the managed to film which took us quiet allot of time because of the amount of shots we put in because in order to get a good grade the amount and the quality of shots have to be a very good standard.

Monday, 7 February 2011

Sound

sound in a film is highly important because it will help shape a film to have it reach its full potential. These type of sounds below are used in many film we watch today.
Diegetic sound is sound that is part of the film world we are viewing. This can be dialogue, music or sound effects that comes from a source within the film world. In this instance the music will be from a source in the film which we notice could actually be producing music, which for example a CD player or jukebox.
Nondiegetic sound is sound which we dont realise as part of the film world such as a voice-over or background music, titles, subtitles and captions.
Parallel sound is sound that matches to an image or action shown.
Contrapuntal sound is sound that does'nt match to an image or action.

Lighting assists to convey how the mood or atmosphere of a particular scene we are subjecting to. If an object or gesture is brightly lit upon with a light, it will show the importance of this moment of the storyline whilst irrelevant detail is in darkness. Shadows in a scene can be used to devolope suspense by hiding elements in the scene from the audience.

The art of the title

Film making
A title sequence is the cinematic method by which films and television programmes use to present their title. In lesson my teacher advised us to go online and look up the website "The Art of the Title". This site reveals the largest collection of film and television titles.
This site has allowed me to understand why the title of a film or tv programm can elaborate the film before one watches, allow the information that is given out in a title sequence. For our thriller it is important for us to decide and include a title.
  • Production Company Ident
  • (Production company name) presents
  • The producer/s of the film
  • Presents main stars
  • Title of film
  • Less important cast
  • Costume designer
  • Music by
  • Film editors
  • Production designers
  • Other Roles within the film (i.e make up etc)
  • Director of Cineamotography
  • Director of Photography
  • Producers
  • Written by
  • Directors
In lesson we were shown the opening sequence to 'Se7en'
The music used in this sequence is very jumpy and disturbing towards the viewer, the editing is fast and a flickering effect is created which enhances the audiences attention.

Health and safety risk assessment

Before we would proceed to plan and to do our filming we had to look at some health and safety risk assessment policy:
1 No filming in inappropriate locations
2 Check safety locations e.g. roads
3 Minimize risk of theft of equipment
4 When filming on location ensure teacher or responsible adult know where you are and have telephone   number and when you will return
5 Check all equipment is working before you leave
6 Ensure you have permission for filming if necessary
7 Always film with at least one other person
8 Ensure you have the permission of those you are filming

Graphic match

A graphic match in a film is a smooth visual transfer from one fram to the next; when two consecutive shots are matched in terms of the way they look. For our thriller we will be looking to add this technique because we believe that it will add a great effect and enhance the thrill and suspense.

Saturday, 5 February 2011

planning

Our plan for our thriller includes money, drug dealing and violence. Our first scene of the opening to our thriller begins with showing a veiw of a town at night time, revealing shop and cars driving by. This then dissolves into a hooded person on the phone talking to his drug dealer, the hooded person then finishes his talk on the phone and begins to walk to his destination. The dealer is in a car with one of his good friends talking and laughing about things that had happened in the past. The friend exits the car and begins to walk to his next destination, as he drifts along he sees the hooded person and they both walk by with gazing with tenson with one another but continue on to where they need to be. Eventually we see the hooded person approach the car of his dealer, the dealer winds down the window of his car and they make an exchange. We then find the hooded person on the phone speaking and saying how he got robbed from doing the drug deal, and then we come to see a distinctive man suited up in a business suit saying that hes coming to kill the person who robbed him, whille he is surrounded with money on his desk with a shot-gun, and a pistol in his hand.

Different types of light

The key light
The key light is the light that is most bright and most influential. For our thriller this would be used to reveal characters that hold in importance, for the audience to gather that this is the moment or action that should be view the most in order for them to understand completely what i occuring in the scene.

The back light
The back light helps counteract the effect of the key light, bu allowing the character or object look more rounded. This lighting would be highly suitable for our thriller as is will allow the characters to be anonymous and making the audience believe that this anonymous character is someone of good justice, but this may not be true, meaning that this type of lighting leaves the audience in suspence.

The filler light
The filler light will help soften the harsh shadows that the key and back lights create, more than one filler light may be used.

Reading a film

The defintion of reading a film means to look at a particular film in great detail to view how it is put together. The way you would usually read a film would be to read an extract from the film rather than actually the whole film. when reading a film it is similar to reading a book; although your're not actually looking at a written page your're viewing the camera screen. Text, books or film can be looked at for a variety of reasons; you can either read a book or watch a film just for enjoyment, or might want to view it more in depth to actully see why you enjoy it.

Mise en scene

Mise en scene is a French term meaning "what is put into a scene or frame". what ever is put in or left out can have a greate difference to the signals we, the audience draw in about the kind of film it is and what we are suppose to be feeling at this moment. A simple shot of a house in a place of no where can be made to look threatening by adding crows around and on top of the house and by having the shot taken as the sun is setting. This same house can be given a different look by adding green grass and having the sun shining brightly, with men doing farm work around the outside of the house; this will made it seem as a jolly place to be.

The elements that shoulg be consider in mise en scene are:
settings and props
costume, hair and make-up
facial expressions and body language
lighting and colour
positioning of characters and objects within a frame

A tracking shot is where the camera follows the action, moving along tracks laid for that purpose, often pulling backwards in a scene.

This here is a crane shot; where the camera mounted on a crane and moves around at a distance above ground level. This can also be done by a camera being attached to an helicopter.

AS media studies Film-(thriller)

This is another past students thriller
This is a past students thriller scene, i personally believe that the shots used in the scene are quite good especially when the protagonist is first seen and a low angle mid-shot is used. This shot emphaises the characters face and shows that he is a controllable and unease character. The sound used for the short scene greatly matches the actions taking place, the sound makes it seem as if theres a mission taking place. The use of the camera overall isnt so good as they don't diverse the shots. I rated this thriller 2 because the use of the camera was'nt fully used appropriately for the thriller.

Name of our production company

This is the ident for our production company i created it on live type which did not take very long to create at first it was a bit tricky but once i got the hang of it i created it very well, the ident is red and black to create a scary effect for our gangster thriller

Analysis of past students thrillers

In lesson we watched scenes of students pasted thrillers, we did this to get an insight of how our thrillers can turn out to be. We came across thrillers that were good and no so good, we had to give a score from 1-5, 5 being excellent and 1 being poor.

I have produced a survey questionnaire to identify the target audience we want our film to be targeted at. The survey questionnaire will help build up for us in producing our short thriller scene, and have it produce successfully. To create my questionnaire i used Survey Monkey, and then i posted it onto my Facebook to receive feedback and here are the answers to my questionnaire.

Course work brief

We have been set a task to construct a thriller, including the titles, aimed at a 15 or 18 certifcate audience. Before the making of our thriller film scene we will need to explore into ohter thrillers to come up with ideas of how our own should be. We must discover the sounds that will be used, the use of lighting and the environment where we will be recording but at the same time they must be appropriate for us to accomplish and be successful in making the short scene.

The Manchurian Candidate

The Manchurian Candidate is a paranoid thriller and also utilized as being a political thriller, greek tragedy and also refers to social context and tensions. This modernised version is different to the back dated one, for example the scene where Sergeant Raymond Shaw is ordered to drown and kill.....

In The Manchurian Candidate, Captain Bennett Marco, , alongside the rest of their infantry platoon become kidnapped during the Korean War in 1952. they all set off to Manchuria which then they are brain washed to have the thought of Shaw saving their lives in combat so that he gets awarded the Medal of Honor.

Years have passed after the war and Marco is back in the US working as an intelligence officer, he begins to suffer from recurring nightmares of Shaw killing two of his comrades and also seeing himself being clinically observed by Chinese and Russian intelligence officials. When Marco discovers that another soldier from the platoon also has the same nightmare, he begins to attempt assembling the mystery and the meaning of the nightmare.

The discovery is that the Communists have beem using Shaw as a sleeper agent, which is activated by seeing the Queen of Diamonds, he is provoked by the appearance and obeys orders and after he will forget what he persisted from the orders given.

Information on Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Hitchcock was born on the 13 August 1899 and passed away 29 April 1980, he was an English filmmaker and producer. In the suspense and psycological thriller genres he pioneered many techniques. Hitchcock was very successful in his native United Kingdom in both silent and early dialogued films, after this successfulness he migrated to Hollywood. In 1956 he had become an American citizen and also remained a British subject.
Hitchcock fashioned  himself in a unique and recognisable directorial style. He allowed viewers to identify with the carmera which moved in a way to mimic the viewers gaze, which will force them to be engage into what is occuring.

He framed shots to have the audience feel the way he wanted them and maximise the anxiety, fear, empathy and he also used innovative film editing to reveal the point of view of the characters. Many of his stories frequently feature fugitives that tried to escape from the law also including "icy blonde" female characters.
Many of the films that Hitchcock filmed had a twist in the endings and highi thrilling plots which featured depictions of violence, crime and murder.

North by Northwest

I have research into a thriller called North by Northwest, produced by Alfred Hitchcock which is an 1959 movie starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason.

This thriller is about a hapless New York advertising executive, called Roger Thornhill who is mistaken for a government agent named George Kaplan, by Foreign spies as he migrates across the country looking for a way for himself to survive.
In this thriller there are many techniques used to have the audience feel mislead; these are as followed cliffhangers, red herrings and suspense.

Suspense is risen in the scene where the plane crop duster attack near a Midwest cornfield, where we the audience are stuck not know the fate of Roger Thornhill, as he is in a life or death situation.

Red herring is used in the scene of where Thornhill is shot by Eve and we are left to believe that his life is over. We then later find that this is a set up for Eve's attempt to escape from Vandamme, and the shot of the bullet was actually a blank.

Sabotage

Sabotage is a film including a terrorist named Verloc, he attempts to cause disruption in London by planting bombs. Alfred Hitchocks, uses dramatic irony in the film Sabotage; dramatic irony is where the characters have no knowledge of what the situtation in the film is. In the case of the film Sabotage a young boy Steavie is sent by Verloc the terrorist, to deliver a package by 1:30pm and the bomb will detonate by 1:45pm, the boy does'nt have any knoledge at all of the package being a bomb but we as an audience do know, this is the example of dramatic irony.

Thoughtout the scene of the boy attempting to get to the destination of where he is to deliver the package, tension is highly built up as time passes by. The music that is used in this scene creates and adds to the tension making the audience feel unconfortable and thinking if the boy will make it to the destination before the bomb detonates. The music that is used sounds similar to a ticking of a clock suggesting that a lot of time is passing by, this music gradually picks up pace as time proceeds building up the suspence. The music that is used sounds like the ticking of a clock which suggest alot of time has passed by.

thriller codes and conventions

The conventions of the thriller genre is to do with sound and editing examples of this are camera angles, quick cuts and music for tension to create and heighten the tension in the film, also the tempo of the music can be sped up when appropriate. lighting is also used and especially the creation of shadows in the film. Mirrors and stairs are also conventions of thriller movies.

Shadow of a doubt

1943 was when the thriller 'shadow of a doubt was made, and is one of Alfred Hitchcock's favourites out of all he's thiller creations. In class we watched the opening to this film and did some analysis using the mise en scene sequence.

Settings and Props
The begining of the scene is set in a bedroom where the light is very dim which suggest that it is day time. Many props were used such as a cigar; this cigar that was held in the hand of Uncle Charlie suggested to us, the audience that he is a wealthy man and is able to afford such possessions. We are then shown cash scattered over a table beside the bed and also on the floor. As the money is on the floor it suggest to us that it is not so important to Uncle Charlie meaning that, that amount of money is near enough worthless to him. Another prop that was used is an empty glass, which Uncle Charlie picks up and throws it at the wall because of his rage.

Positioning of characters and objects within the frame
When Charlie is outside the apartment he was in he is in the middle of the frame. There are two men who are after him and they're in the foreground of the frame, as charlies becomes in the background, the two guys are on either side, which reveals and suggests that Charlie is trapped.

Costume, Hair and Make up
In the opening sequence Uncle Charlie is wearing a suit which seems to look very expensive and his hair is slicked back with gel.

Lighting and Colour
At first light is seen entering the room where Uncle Charlie is in laying on his bed, darkness is then comes about as a woman comes into the room and pull the blinds down. From this Charlie is then brought to life, getting up from his bed and begins to move around, this here suggests that he likes the darkness, this allows as to believe he is the antagonist in the film.

Facial expressions and Body language
At the begining as Uncle Charlie is laying on his bed, his facial expressions showed that he was tired, calm and in a relaxed state.
